Summary

Fluency in the language of host countries is one of the main vectors of migrant integration, by learning on the job or in training. A synthesis of knowledge on this issue is needed because immigration has been at the center of the public and the political debate for three decades in France and more generally in Europe. Now, for better or for worse, opinions on this subject are manifested, but are biased, often unrelated to reality.
What is the role of language in the integration process? How do you learn a language without going through formal learning? What are the arrangements put in place to ensure the linguistic training of migrants and according to which political or institutional logic? These are the central questions answered by contributors, researchers in language sciences or education sciences, but also professionals in the training of adults in integration.
